WEEDSPORT — Following proper procedures and having carbon
monoxide detectors installed were two reasons a carbon monoxide
incident at Evergreen Heights adult home in Weedsport ended the way
it did – without tragedy.
A carbon monoxide alarm was activated at 8:50 a.m. Thursday at
the home, located at 8939 Oakland St., Weedsport, said Weedsport
Fire Department Chief David James.
James said when the fire department arrived, the 53 residents
were assembled outside at a meeting place that is specified in the
home’s emergency procedure. There were also 11 staff members who
were evacuated from the home.
James said the fire department found that carbon monoxide
readings were elevated in the building and especially in the
utility room, which was pinpointed with excessive levels of carbon
monoxide.
“We certainly knew there was an issue of some type,” he
said.
The fire department called New York State Electric and Gas to
the scene, and then called the Weedsport Central School District,
which donated two school buses to help transport residents, around
10 a.m., to the First Baptist Church on Liberty Street in
Weedsport. James said the home had a prior agreement with the
church to use it as a reception area for residents in the case of
